Influence of Vehicle Shape and Stiffness on the Pedestrian Lower Extremity Injuries: Review of Current Pedestrian Lower Leg Test Procedure
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study aims at evaluating the current pedestrian lower leg test procedure with respect to the human response in a pedestrian accident. The test procedure is examined for a variety of representative cars of the European fleet. The investigation is purely based on numerical simulations carried out using the regulatory lower leg impactor, as described in the Directive 2004/90/EC, and compared to simulations where the impactor is replaced by the human FE model THUMS (Total HUman Model for Safety). THUMS was developed in collaboration by Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Central R&D Labs.. It has been extensively validated under pedestrian impact conditions and its response has been proven to be biofidelic. Therefore, THUMS results are considered as reference for the analysis of the lower leg impactor simulation results. THUMS and impactor responses are compared looking at: • their kinematics, accelerations, velocities and deflections, • their injury prediction, • And finally, their contact forces with the vehicle structures. This work was carried out in the frame of the sub-project No3 on “pedestrians and cyclist accidents” of the European funded project “Advanced PROtection SYStem”, APROSYS.

Speed Limit in City Area and Improvement of Vehicle Front Design for Pedestrian Impact Protection– a Computer Simulation Study
This paper presented a part of results from an ongoing project for pedestrian protection, which is carried out at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. A validated pedestrian mathematical model was used in this study to simulate vehicle-pedestrian impacts. A large number of simulations have been carried out with various parameters. The injury-related parameters concerning head, chest, pe...
متن کاملPedestrian Injuries By Source: Serious and Disabling Injuries in US and European Cases.
US and European pedestrian crash cases were analyzed to determine frequency of injury by body region and by the vehicle component identified as the injury source. US pedestrian data was drawn from the Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS). European pedestrian data was drawn from the German In-Depth Accident Study (GIDAS). Results were analyzed in terms of both serious injury (AIS 3+) and disabling...

Previous vehicle-to-pedestrian simulations and experiments using pedestrian dummies and cadavers have shown that factors such as vehicle shape, pedestrian anthropometry and pre-impact conditions influence pedestrian kinematics and injury mechanisms. Generic pedestrian bucks, that approximate the geometrical and stiffness properties of current vehicles, would be useful in studying the influence ...
متن کاملCrash Injury Analysis of Knee Joint Considering Pedestrian Safety
Background: Lower extremity injuries are frequently observed in car-to-pedestrian accidents and due to the bumper height of most cars, knee joint is one of the most damaged body parts in car-to-pedestrian collisions. Objective: The aim of this paper is first to provide an accurate Finite Element model of the knee joint and second to investigate lower limb impact biomechanics in car-to-pede...
متن کاملDetermination of Bumper Styling and Engineering Parameters to Reduce Pedestrian Leg Injuries
The European Commission is proposing legislation aimed at reducing the severity of injuries sustained by pedestrians in the event of an impact with the front-end of a motor vehicle. One aspect of this proposed legislation is reducing the pedestrian's leg injuries due to contact with the bumper and frontal surfaces of a vehicle, assessed using a 'pedestrian leg impact device,' or 'leg-form.' Thi...
